The workshop took place from February 18 to February 21, 2025, in Da Nang, with technical support from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA). The event gathered nearly 40 delegates from various agencies and sectors directly involved in implementing the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA). Participants included Ms. Monica Finlayson, Agricultural Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Hanoi; leaders of the Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance Department; experts from AFMA; leaders and lecturers from Nha Trang University; and representatives from the General Department of Customs, the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the Legal Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the Directorate of Fisheries, the Department of Quality, Processing, and Market Development, the Department of Animal Health, local Border Guard forces, and designated ports receiving foreign vessels.
During the workshop, delegates were introduced to Vietnam’s current procedures for controlling foreign fishing vessels at ports, as well as international regulations and Australia’s experience in this field. Based on these insights, participants provided input to refine the process in a way that aligns with Vietnam’s specific context. The workshop played a crucial role not only in improving the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for controlling imported fishery products to combat IUU fishing but also in supporting Vietnam’s efforts to lift the European Commission (EC)’s “Yellow Card” warning.
