From April 7–9, 2026, in Quy Nhon City (formerly Binh Dinh Province, now part of Gia Lai Province), the Directorate of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment convened a National Workshop on Data Review and Annual Catch Estimation for Tuna Fisheries.

The workshop was attended by international experts from the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), along with representatives from Sub-Departments of Fisheries and Fishing Port Management Boards from Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Thap. Participants also included the Northern Fisheries Research Center; the Faculty of Fisheries Science – School of Fisheries and Life Sciences; the World Wide Fund for Nature in Viet Nam (WWF-Viet Nam); and the Vietnam Tuna Association.

Key topics discussed in depth during the workshop included:

Reviewing and assessing the current status of tuna fisheries data collection;

Harmonizing methodologies for annual catch estimation;

Strengthening capacity for data collection, analysis, and reporting;

Meeting transparency requirements and fulfilling international reporting obligations.

The Vietnam Tuna Association participated in the workshop as a key stakeholder, serving as a bridge between government authorities, industry enterprises, and fishers across the entire tuna value chain—from harvesting, procurement, and processing to export. In parallel, the Association is co-implementing the Yellowfin Tuna Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) in collaboration with WWF-Viet Nam, and is the lead coordinator of the Skipjack Tuna Fishery Improvement Program aligned with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standards (VIETNAM SKJ MSC IP).

These initiatives contribute to advancing Vietnam’s tuna industry toward achieving MSC eco-certification, thereby promoting sustainable fisheries development.
