Training workshop "Enhancing Best Practices for Social Responsibility in Fisheries"

As part of the Vietnam Yellowfin Tuna Improvement Project, on March 20, in Nha Trang, the Vietnam Tuna Association held a workshop and training workshop "Enhancing Good Practices for Social Responsibility in Fisheries," supported by the Resources Legacy Fund. The workshop was attended by over 40 participants, including fishermen, vessel owners, middle-men, and experts.

The workshop provided information and best practices on social responsibility, focusing on enhancing safety and effectiveness in working environment. Presentations from VINATUNA staff aimed to raise awareness among vessel owners, captains, and middle men about enhancing social responsibility, particularly in labor rights such as the minimum age, salary, maining and rest hours, and preventing forced labor. VINATUNA also introduced a "Grievance Mechanism" to guide fishermen on methods to report issues. This system includes communication channels with shore stations and agencies for assistance at sea in terms of search and rescue, medical support, and vessel operations. Additionally, it supports fishermen through social and occupational organizations such as the Vietnam Fisheries Association and the Vietnam Tuna Association. This initiative enhancing communication and support for workers in the fishing industry, ensure the rights and responsibilities involved factors. The workshop offers practical recommendations aimed at creating a sustainable and equitable fishing community, promoting the equality in career development & opportunities for labors.

Mr. Đỗ Văn Thái, a fishing vessel captain, said: "Although working at sea, I always assign the adequate rest and sleep time for crews. After port arrival, whether profitable or not, I ensure to pay the crew within two days. Through this workshop, I have learned valuable knowledge. I will practie to ensure the best working conditions for my crew, thus improving the efficiency of our fishing operations."

The activities of enhancing social responsibility also contribute to the tuna fishing industry meeting the social criteria (HRSRP) of the FIP project, aiming to achieve MSC certification for Vietnamese tuna. Through this training, the Vietnam Tuna Association aims to encourage the comprehensive participation from fishermen and stakeholders to enhance social responsibility, improve labor rights in the tuna supply chain, ensure the sustainable development for the fishing industry.
