🐟 COMMON TUNA SPECIES FOUND IN VIETNAM

Tuna is one of Vietnam's most valuable marine fish resources, playing a significant role in both domestic seafood supply and international trade. Thanks to its rich marine biodiversity, Vietnam's waters are home to a diverse range of tuna species belonging to the family Scombridae, including both highly migratory oceanic tunas and neritic tuna species found in coastal waters.

📖 In today's post, we're introducing eight tuna species commonly found in Vietnamese waters:

Among these, Yellowfin Tuna, Bigeye Tuna, and Skipjack Tuna are the most commercially important species, accounting for the majority of Vietnam's oceanic tuna landings and supporting the country's offshore tuna fishery. Other species, including Longtail Tuna, Kawakawa, Bullet Tuna, Frigate Tuna, and Albacore Tuna are also harvested for domestic consumption, seafood processing, and export markets.

🌊 Vietnam's tuna fishing grounds are mainly located in the central and southeastern waters, particularly offshore South Central Vietnam with favourable oceanographic conditions. Seasonal ocean currents, water temperature, and abundant prey create ideal habitats for tuna to migrate, aggregate, and thrive.

⚓ Major tuna fishing areas in Vietnam include Gia Lai (formerly Binh Dinh Province), Dak Lak (formerly Phu Yen Province), Khanh Hoa, Lam Dong (formerly Binh Thuan Province), Quang Ngai, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province), Dong Thap (formerly Tien Giang Province), and other coastal provinces. Among these, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, and Khanh Hoa are the central for offshore oceanic tuna fisheries, supported by offshore fishing fleets, well-developed fishing ports, and extensive seafood enterprises facilities.

🍣 Tuna products range from whole fish and frozen fillets to frozen loins, fresh sashimi-grade tuna, canned tuna, and a variety of value-added seafood products. Today, Vietnamese tuna is exported to major markets including the European Union, the United States, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Australia, and the Middle East, making an important contribution to the country's seafood export sector.

🌊 Beyond its economic value, tuna is an important marine resource that supports coastal livelihoods, contributes to Vietnam's blue economy, and develope the country's seafood processing and export industries. Sustainable harvesting, effective fisheries management, and responsible use of tuna resources are essential to maintaining healthy fish stocks, enhancing product value, and supporting the long-term development of Vietnam's fisheries sector.
