On July 28, 2026, in Khanh Hoa, the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA) attended the National Workshop on Strengthening Capacity to Implement CMM Obligations and the Roadmap to Become a Full Member of WCPFC.
The workshop was chaired by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance, with the participation and coordination of the WCPFC Executive Director, the Manager of the Western Pacific and East Asia (WPEA) Project, experts from the Pacific Community (SPC), and authorities: the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Public Security, Departments of Agriculture and Environment, and Sub-Departments of Fisheries and Sea & Islands of coastal provinces and cities; industry associations (VASEP, VINATUNA); and tuna processing and exporting enterprises.
The workshop shared and discussed the results of Vietnam's implementation of obligations and WCPFC requirements regarding Conservation and Management Measures (CMMs), fishery data collection and reporting, discussing the opportunities, challenges, and Vietnam's roadmap in the process of becoming a full member of the WCPFC.
Progressing towards full WCPFC membership will bring many positive impacts for Vietnam in terms of regional fisheries cooperation, capacity building for management, and promoting the tuna industry's development in a modern and responsible direction. At the workshop, delegates representing tuna processing and import-export enterprises shared their desires for the roadmap to full WCPFC membership. For enterprises, this is an opportunity to expand market access, develop raw material sources from fishing vessels from RFMOs (Regional Fisheries Management Organizations), and cooperation in exploitation and fishing on the high seas. Full WCPFC membership enables Vietnam to effectively enforce conservation measures (CMMs) to protect tuna & high migratory fish resources, enhance traceability, and combat IUU fishing, aligning with the Vietnam tuna industry's long-term development goals.
VINATUNA hopes that this is an important and practical opportunity for international cooperation, creating a premise to promote the sustainable development and integration of Vietnam's fisheries while elevating the nation's prestige in the world. In its role as a socio-professional organization representing the tuna industry in Vietnam, VINATUNA will continue to promote and strengthen coordination with the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance to study the roadmap and plan for becoming a full member of the WCPFC regional fisheries management organization.
