What should be checked before heading out to sea to keep the crew and vessel safe? What should you do if the weather turns bad, the engine fails, water enters the vessel, or someone falls overboard? These are among the topics covered in the Handbook on Safety and Emergency Response for tuna fishermen, produced through the 2026 Improving Safety at Sea Project. The project is implemented by the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA) with funding from the International Fund for Fishing Safety (IFFS).

What should be checked before heading out to sea to keep the crew and vessel safe? What should you do if the weather turns bad, the engine fails, water enters the vessel, or someone falls overboard?

These are among the topics covered in the Handbook on Safety and Emergency Response for tuna fishermen, produced through the 2026 Improving Safety at Sea Project. The project is implemented by the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA) with funding from the International Fund for Fishing Safety (IFFS).

With concise guidance and illustrations, the handbook provides practical information on:

▪️ Inspecting the vessel and preparing safety equipment before each trip.

▪️ Monitoring the weather, communication at sea

▪️ Emergencies respone procedures at sea.

▪️ Collision avoidance, navigation lights & signal at sea

We invite fishers, vessel owners and captains to read the handbook, discuss it with their crews and share it with others who work at sea. Reviewing the guidance and completing each preparation step can help make every trip safer.
