LAUNCHING THE VIETNAM SKIPJACK TUNA FISHERY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM UNDER MSC STANDARDS

With the objectives of promoting sustainability and achieving MSC ecolabel certification for Vietnam’s skipjack tuna fishery, VINATUNA, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is going to officially launch the “Vietnam Skipjack Tuna Fishery Improvement Program” (VIETNAM SKJ MSC IP). This initiative is guided and supported directly by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), aims to establish a structured roadmap aligned with international standards, facilitating the pathway toward achieving MSC certification in the future.

The project is spearheaded by VINATUNA to enhance the value of Vietnamese tuna in the global market and broaden international market access. It adopts a transparent and equitable contribution model, ensuring that participating enterprises directly benefit from MSC evaluation outcomes.

The program consists of four key phases:

1. MSC Enrollment

2. MSC IP Implementation

3. Comprehensive MSC Assessment

4. Maintenance and Recertification

VINATUNA has been working closely with several Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs) to identify the most suitable and reputable partner to carry out the pre-assessment and support the enrollment of the project. The objective is to complete the project registration on the MSC website by October 2025, in accordance with MSC’s improvement standards.

Prject’s partners will be recognized as official members of the program, with opportunities for brand promotion and direct connection to MSC buyers. Project’s members are also entitled to apply the sustainability statement 'This product comes from a fishery which is in the Marine Stewardship Council’s Improvement Program. www.msc.org/improve – IMP-C-XXXXX' on the packaging of products under the Program, upon meeting all conditions and requirements regulated by MSC. These include: All MSC performance indicators of the Vietnam skipjack tuna sector Improvement Program must achieve above SG60, and the enterprizes must have an traceability systemt which is fit with MSC Chain of Custody (CoC) standard.

Currently, there are 10 Vietnamese enterprises and 1 international buyer have officially enrolled in the program. VINATUNA encourages further participation from both domestic stakeholders and international purchasers, aiming to the objectives of advancing the sustainability and achieving Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) ecolabel certification for of Vietnam’s skipjack tuna fishery.
