On 3–4 November 2025, the Revfin Project Management Unit of Nha Trang University held a training program on “Sustainable Fishing Gear Waste Management – The Role of Fishers and Fishing Ports” at Hon Ro and Vinh Luong fishing ports in Khanh Hoa Province. The Vietnam Tuna Association also supported the workshop by providing technical input and sharing practical insights in tuna sector. More than 150 fishers and port officers took part, including many captains and vessel owners from various fishing sectors, among them several operating tuna handline and purse sein. Their strong participation helped keep the discussions grounded in real working conditions at sea.
The training covered the current situation of fishing gear waste, the impacts of abandoned, lost, discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), and how to identify and sort different types of gear waste. Participants were introduced to guidance cards promoting good practices in gear handling, methods to maintain gear and reduce ALDFG, and procedures for delivering collected waste at the port to support recycling efforts. These activities reflect global efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of fishing gear waste and support the fisheries in meeting international sustainability standards.

The training is part of the project “Preventing, Reducing and Recycling Fishing Gear Waste in Vietnam’s Marine Environment,” funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment of Germany, in cooperation with Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences and Vietnamese partners. The program helps equip fishers and port officers with practical knowledge to reduce fishing gear waste, protect marine ecosystems, and move toward more sustainable fisheries. VINATUNA is honored to participate in this project and is committed to further contributing to future efforts that advance responsible and sustainable fisheries.
