On 05 January 2026 in Hanoi, the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA) was pleased to take part in the series of events marking the 20th anniversary of the People and Nature Reconciliation (PanNature) Center—an important milestone celebrating two decades of steadfast efforts to advance nature conservation and sustainable development in Viet Nam.
In the morning session, “Promoting Grassroots Biodiversity Conservation Initiatives,” which created space for practical exchange on what works, what’s challenging, and where opportunities lie for community-led conservation. The discussion focused on priority areas such as wetlands and marine ecosystems, natural forests, and the protection of threatened and endangered species, while also drawing insights from other grant programs with similar objectives.
During the session, VINATUNA introduced its funded initiative under PanNature’s Grassroots Conservation Grants Program: “Mitigating the Impacts on Endangered, Threatened and Protected Species (ETPs) in the Tuna Purse Seine Fishery.” The project strengthens a science- and data-driven approach, builds fishers’ capacity to prevent and respond to interactions with ETP species, and promotes responsible fishing practices. By doing so, VINATUNA aims to support marine biodiversity conservation while safeguarding livelihoods and helping Viet Nam’s tuna fishery meet international standards and market expectations, towarding the sustainable – responsible development of fishery.
In the afternoon, the dialogue “Vietnam’s Nature—Past, Present, and the Next Hundred Years” broadened the conversation to long-term strategies, including community-based conservation, models beyond protected areas, and nature-based solutions in the context of accelerating biodiversity loss and climate change. The day concluded with PanNature’s anniversary celebration, recognizing the contributions of staff across generations and the sustained support of stakeholders.
Marking this milestone, VINATUNA congratulates PanNature on 20 years of impact and appreciates the Center’s partnership through the Grassroots Conservation Grants Program. VINATUNA looks forward to continued collaboration to scale effective grassroots solutions for nature and people in Viet Nam.
