Workshop "Enhancing Good Practices on Occupational Safety in Fishery" in Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province

On April 11, 2025, in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province, the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA), in collaboration with the International Fund for Fishing Safety (IFFS) and local authorities, organized a workshop titled “Enhancing Good  Practices on Occupational Safety in Fishery.” The workshop was attended by 40 local fishermen, along with representatives from VINATUNA, the Binh Dinh Sub-Department of Fisheries, and the People’s Committees of Tran Phu and Hai Cang wards.

Hội thảo nằm trong khuôn khổ Dự án “Cải thiện An toàn lao động trên biển” do IFFS tài trợ, nhằm nâng cao nhận thức và cải thiện điều kiện an toàn lao động trên biển cho ngư dân. Thông qua chương trình, ngư dân đã được VINATUNA hướng dẫn cụ thể về các nội dung cần thiết như kiến thức y tế cơ bản, kỹ năng sơ cấp cứu trên tàu, cách sử dụng thiết bị cứu sinh – cứu hỏa và kỹ năng liên lạc hiệu quả khi gặp sự cố khẩn cấp.

This workshop was part of the “Improving Occupational Safety at Sea” project funded by IFFS. It aimed to raise awareness and provide practical knowledge on occupational safety for fishermen. The program focused on critical topics such as basic healthcare and first aid on fishing vessels, proper use of life-saving and firefighting equipment, and emergency communication procedures at sea.

Representatives from VINATUNA introduced ILO Convention 188 on “Work in Fishing,” shared best practices for ensuring safety on fishing vessels, presented information on marine communication and safety systems, and provided guidance on the proper use of life-saving and firefighting devices. Additionally, VINATUNA also updated on the progress of the Fishery Improvement Program toward achieving MSC certification for Vietnam’s yellowfin tuna sector.

Fishermen representatives shared that they had gained valuable knowledge and practical skills in ensuring safety at sea, especially in emergency situations. The topics related to first aid, equipment use, and risk response were considered highly relevant and beneficial to their daily work at sea. Participants also expressed their desire to join similar training activities in the future, as such events provide opportunities for experience sharing, skill enhancement, and increased awareness and professionalism in the fishery sector.
