As part of the Vietnam Skipjack Tuna Purse Seine Fishery Improvement Programme under MSC standards (VN SKJ MSC IP), VINATUNA met with representatives of the Sub-Departments of Seas, Islands and Fisheries in Gia Lai, Quang Ngai and Da Nang. These provinces have well-developed skipjack tuna purse seine fisheries. Over the years, this fishery has provided livelihoods for local fishing communities, contributed economic value to Vietnam’s tuna export sector.
The VN SKJ MSC IP aims to promote sustainable fisheries practices, protect marine resources, reduce impacts on the ecosystem, and improve fisheries management. With a five-year roadmap, it targets MSC certification for Vietnam’s skipjack tuna fishery by 2030. Achieving MSC certification is expected to enhance the value and competitiveness of Vietnamese tuna products, while supporting responsible fishing and improving market access.
During the meetings, VINATUNA and local authorities discussed the Programme’s key objectives, implementation plans, and cooperation mechanisms at the provincial level. Sub-Departments representatives recognized the significance and relevance of the Programme, as its objectives are closely aligned with local priorities in promoting sustainable and responsible fisheries development, supporting fisheries management.
VINATUNA sincerely appreciates the support and cooperation of the Sub-Departments of Seas, Islands and Fisheries in Gia Lai, Quang Ngai and Da Nang. Together with the continued engagement of member companies, fishers, buyers and other stakeholders in the tuna supply chain, this cooperation provides an important foundation for the successful implementation of the Programme.
The Vietnam Skipjack Tuna Purse Seine Fishery Improvement Programme under MSC standards is supported by nine Vietnamese skipjack tuna processing and export companies.
