On October 02, 2025, the Vietnam skipjack tuna purse seine fishery was officially recognized by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) as eligible to join the MSC Improvement Program (MSC - IP). This milestone marks a crucial step toward achieving the world-renowned MSC ecolabel for sustainable fisheries.

According to the eligibility report, the fishery meets all entry requirements and has developed a feasible 5-year Improvement Action Plan (2025–2030). Led by the Vietnam Tuna Association (VINATUNA), the program will focus on:

  • Expanding observer and electronic monitoring (EM) coverage.
  • Strengthening catch data collection and sharing systems.
  • Developing bycatch mitigation measures and protecting endangered species.
  • Enhancing fisher awareness and local community engagement.

By 2030, the fishery aims to complete its improvements and enter full MSC assessment, targeting certification in 2031.

This initiative not only enhances the international reputation of Vietnamese tuna but also demonstrates our strong commitment to sustainable fisheries, ocean conservation, and global market integration.

Let’s work together to bring Vietnam’s tuna to the world!
